1994 – The M6.7 Northridge quake centered in the San
Fernando Valley killed 57 Californians, injured more than
9,000 and threw much of the Los Angeles basin into turmoil
as roads were made impassable and freeways collapsed.
Two hospitals suffered major structural damage, although no
lives were lost in the hospitals. The quake and its many
aftershocks left behind more than $40 billion in damage
($52 billion).
